Health Services and Student Health Care

Health care services for degree students are provided by the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS)

Since the beginning of 2021, the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) has been providing the student health care services to all university students in Finland. The students who are entitled to use the services of FSHS will pay the statutory health care fee to Kela by themselves twice a year.

Up-to-date information on the healthcare fee for higher education students and payment of the fee is available on Kela’s website.

Entitled to FSHS services are students, who are registered as attending for the current term and are studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or a double degree earned in a university of applied sciences.

Exchange students, students in open university and students in tailor-made, customer-specific training programmes are not entitled to use FSHS services.

Students who have social security coverage from another EU/EEA country, from Switzerland or from Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Students do not have to pay the healthcare fee if they have social security coverage from another EU/EEA country, from Switzerland or from Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Despite not paying the fee, they may use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS). Students who wish to use the services of the FSHS must be prepared to show a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as of 1 January 2023. If a student has social security coverage from another EU/EEA country or from Switzerland or from Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the student must inform Kela about this. This can be done by sending a copy of a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or some other document, showing that the person is covered under the social security system of some other country that applies the EU provisions. If the student has already paid the healthcare fee, the student can ask Kela to pay back the fee.

When the services of FSHS are not available, in urgent matters, contact the health center of your home municipality or the Wellbeing services county of South Ostrobothnia’s care evaluation at 116 117.

• First aid and on-call health care: Patients in need of urgent care can be taken to the on-call service at the Seinäjoki health and social services centre (=sote-keskus), Koskenalantie 18, 1 st floor (Y-building, next to the Seinäjoki Central Hospital), Seinäjoki, tel. +358 6 425 5311 (Mon–Fri at 8–18, weekends 10–16)
• When the Seinäjoki health and social services centre is closed, first call to the care evaluation number 116 117, or go to the First Aid Service Clinic at the Central Hospital, address Koskenalantie 18 (Y-building), Seinäjoki, tel. 116 117 (24h).​​​​​​​

If you come from an EU/EAA country or from Switzerland or from Great Britain and Northern Ireland, you should bring a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you. The card ensures that you will get health care services at the same price as Finnish citizens. In addition, you are strongly recommended to have your own insurance which covers accidents and illnesses. Read more about the EHIC card here >

If you come from a non-EU/EEA country you need to have a sufficient health insurance coverage. Further information at the Finnish Immigration Service.

Seinäjoki health and social services centre

In case of emergency call 112 (ambulance, police, fire brigade), if you need first aid.

If there is no matter of life or death (for example ear pain, eye infection or sore throat), contact Seinäjoki health and social services centre (=-sote-keskus), Mon–Fri at 8–18, weekends 10–16.

Students without a European Health Insurance card (students from non-EU/EEA countries) are advised to use private doctor services.

First aid service clinic

At night, contact the first aid service clinic at the Central Hospital (=keskussairaala).

Only patients whose treatment cannot be delayed without inflicting mortal danger or a serious deterioration of health caused by disease or illness, are treated at the first aid service clinic. It is not possible to make an appointment to the first aid clinic.

Private doctor

There are various private clinics in Seinäjoki and in other towns and municipalities. It costs about 70 euros to consult a private doctor. Check the coverage of your insurance!
