The number of applicants for SeAMK’s English-language degree programmes skyrocketed in the first joint application of this spring

The number of applicants to the Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (SeAMK) increased enormously in the first joint application in the spring of 2022. Universities’ first joint application in this spring ended on Wednesday, January 19 at 3 p.m.

There was a total of 2,481 applicants for SeAMK’s four Bachelor degree programmes and one master degree programme in English. Last spring, there were 802 applicants for the three Bachelor degree programmes in the first joint application.

Degree programmes in English were of interest

The Bachelor of Engineering, Agri-food Engineering was the new degree programme in the joint application, starting next autumn for the first time. This new degree programme further strengthens SeAMK’s unique education and RDI field of food. There was a total of 357 applicants for 25 starting positions of the new Agri-food Engineering degree programme.

The Bachelor of Business Administration, International Business, which has been on offer for the longest time of SeAMK’s English-language degree programmes, attracted 757 applicants, which is 538 more than in 2021 (an increase of 246% in the number of applicants).

There were 502 applicants for the Bachelor of Health Care, Nursing degree programme, which is 135 more than a year ago (an increase of 37% in the number of applicants). In addition to English language skills, B1 language proficiency in Finnish is required for this degree programme.

The Bachelor of Engineering, Automation Engineering degree programme, which began last autumn, was now in joint application for the second time. Its number of applicants was also gratifyingly growing. There were altogether 376 applicants, compared to 216 last year (an increase of 74% in the number of applicants).

The English-language Master degree programme of Master of Business Administration, International Business Management was on the joint application list again. There were 489 applicants, compared to 167 in the 2020 application (an increase of 193% compared to the 2020 application).

More international experts needed

Finland needs international workforce. SeAMK has increased the number of English-language degree programmes, and investments have also been made in international marketing and student recruitment to acquire new experts.

“It is important for our region and Finland that companies and other organisations also have skilled workforce in the future. At SeAMK, we are purposefully developing international student recruitment and that work will continue. The number of applicants of the joint application looks very good. I am pleased that the new food-themed English-language Agri-food Engineering degree programme was popular, and in addition to this, we also saw really great growth in our other international degree programmes,” says Jaakko Hallila, President of the Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences.

In the first joint application of this spring, an applicant can apply for a maximum of six different degree programmes using a single application form. Programmes cannot be prioritised. An applicant may be selected for more than one degree programme in different applications but may accept only one place of study leading to a university degree from education beginning in the same semester.
